When it comes to home security technology, you’re spoiled for choice right now. Smart locks, smart doorbells, smart alarms and smart cameras. But one of the most innovative providers of smart home technology, SwitchBot is starting to become a serious player in home security, and has just launched a new indoor camera.

The company that brought us the clever little “bots” that turn things on and off remotely, and the brilliant curtain-opening devices, already has a sleek little camera in its product line, but the new one I I tested offers pan and tilt functionality, which adds to its versatility.

Truth be told, the SwitchBot Pan/Tilt Camera doesn’t do anything more than some of the other high-end cameras on the market, but it packs a lot of smart features into a SwitchBot bargain price.

Available on the SwitchBot website for $40, or around £32 in our money, you’ll get full 360-degree panning with 115-degree tilt and a two-megapixel 1080p f2.0 aperture camera.

It also has smart motion tracking, which means you won’t need to move the camera manually while you keep an eye on your pets. Although this is by no means a tedious task as the app is very easy to navigate.

In fact, this is one of my favorite aspects of the SwitchBot camera. It connects so easily and reliably to your WiFi. Many cameras I’ve tested took a few tries, but the SwitchBot app is clean, well-designed, and very easy to use. Not to mention very reliable.

Of course it gives you notifications if it detects motion and of course it has a night mode and it can connect to a smart speaker. But another feature that I really like is how you can close the camera. So if you think someone might intercept it and spy on you, you just close their feed.

Video storage is either via a micro SD card up to 128GB, which you will need to purchase yourself, or you can use cloud storage.

And another bonus feature is the fact that it can connect to the SwitchBot ecosystem. Say, for example, you have a motion detector or a contact sensor, the camera can be activated and quickly pan around your door to show you who has just entered.

I really don’t know how to blame SwitchBot’s new camera. I own a few TP-Link cameras that do a similar job of panning and tilting, but they fall far short of the number of features offered by the SwitchBot.

It is by far one of the best cameras I have tested. And now I want one in every room of my house.
