WATCH: Arvada’s home struck by lightning caught on doorbell camera

ARVADA, Colo. (KDVR) – A homeowner and her mother fled to safety Sunday afternoon after lightning, described as as loud as a bomb, rocked their Arvada home.
“We fled because we thought it was the tree that fell on our house. That’s what it looked like,” said home owner Amanda Strawn.
Standing in front of the house, his neighbors across the street had come out to let Strawn know that his house had been struck by lightning.
“Our neighbors told us that they filmed everything on security footage, so we watched everything,” Strawn said.
After watching the video, Strawn said she was grateful her whole family was safe. The lightning, she described, traveled from the tree in the front to the drainage system. It even started a small fire that eventually went out on the right side of his roof.
“There were actually some burn marks that we saw yesterday,” Strawn said.
The damage Strawn has compiled so far
- A broken television.
- One of his garage doors won’t open.
- A few burn marks outside the house.
- One outlet does not work.
- His decoder is burned out.
- The WI-FI does not work.
- The air conditioning thermostat does not work.
- She still doesn’t know everything that was affected by the strike.
“I don’t know how anyone survives something like that,” Strawn said.
His opposite neighbor Kevin Gutknecht shared the video with FOX31 and Channel 2. He didn’t see the lightning strike, but his stepfather who was visiting for the long weekend did. .
“We walked out, neighbors walked out holding their ears wondering what happened,” said Rex Hanks, who saw the strike happen.
Strawn said she expects to have to chop down the tree out front, which breaks her heart.
“Once it hits the tree, it dies from the inside and goes down,” Strawn said. “I was really shocked what a crazy time. I’m glad he got it on the security footage.
She’s grateful that her neighbors filmed the whole thing, especially since she’ll file all damages with her insurance.
