vivo V23 5G vs OPPO Reno6 5G: Camera Comparison

vivo V23 5G and OPPO Reno6 5G are currently among the best mid-range smartphones in Kenya. We have already reviewed them both (vivo V23 5G review, OPPO Reno6 5G review), including their camera performance, but how do they compare to each other.
vivo V23 5G comes with five cameras – three on the back and two on the front. We have a 64MP triple camera setup which includes an 8MP ultrawide with a 120 degree field of view and a 2MP macro sensor. OPPO Reno6 5G comes with a 64MP triple camera setup which includes an 8MP ultra wide lens and a 2MP macro lens.

For selfies, the vivo V23 5G has a 50MP main camera and an 8MP ultra-wide front camera housed in the notch. On the other hand, we have a 32MP punch-hole selfie camera for the OPPO Reno6 5G.

The Vivo V23 supports video recording up to 4K 30fps for selfie cameras and main cameras. it’s pretty cool, especially for vlogging. You can also shoot in 1080p at 60fps or 30fps.
Modes to play with include Double Exposure, Pro, High Res, Time-Lapse, Slo-Mo, Dual View, Movie, and Live Photo.
Additional settings include framing lines, level meter, watermark, and motion autofocus.
You can record 4K videos at 30fps, 1080p at 30fps and 60fps with OPPO Reno6 5G. Other video modes include Timelapse, Slowmo at 1080p, Dual Video and Film mode which switches to landscape mode with regular or ultrawide mode as well as manual controls for focus, white balance and ISO.
Camera modes worth checking out include Bokeh Flare Portrait, Enhanced AI Highlight Video, AI Color Portrait, Monochrome Video, Soloop Smart Video Editor, Night Flare Portrait, Ultra-clear 108MP Image, Dual-view Video among others I’ve seen with. loved playing.
So how they compare when put against each other:
From the photos above, you will see that OPPO opts for a flatter but true to life look while vivo opts for a contrasting and vibrant look in its photos. Vivo Photos are social media ready and that’s what most people will prefer.
Even for selfies, the shots stand out more on vivo than on OPPO.
Even though vivo v23 5G takes relatively wide ultra wide shots, it cannot handle shadows and details like the OPPO Reno6 5G.
Overall, both phones pack an average punch and offer impressive processing for daylight photos. Now let’s see how they behave when the sun begins to set.

For low-light shots, OPPO struggles a bit with dynamic range and shadows and vivo excels here. vivo also saturates its photos even in low light compared to OPPO shots.
For some shots, vivo is brighter like in this CK Square shot. OPPO illuminates its photos for ultra-wide shots.
Selfies and portraits are still handled fairly well by both.
Here are some other examples:

When darkness sets in, both phones hold their own.

vivo takes pretty decent night shots compared to OPPO. Details are retained and they are brighter even in SuperNight mode as you saw above.
Night photos taken by the vivo V23 5G are less noisy. However, he struggles with flares as you saw above.
Selfies on the other hand – the two are related. OPPO opts for brighter images while vivo sticks to a natural look which I preferred. With vivo V23 4G, you can choose to use the dual LED lights that Vivo calls the Dual-Tone Spotlight flash for low-light selfies.
Conclusion
Both phones have fought hard and it will all come down to your preference. vivo V23 5G takes the crown for me thanks to the vibrant photos both during the day and in low-light scenarios.
This was a camera comparison review but I would like to add that compared to OPPO Reno6 5G you get more bang for your buck as vivo V23 5G comes with Dimensity 920 5G chipset while that the OPPO Reno6 5G comes with the Dimensity 900 processor. But in fairness, OPPO Reno6 5G was launched 6 months ago.
We might put the vivo V23 5G against the yet to be launched OPPO Reno7 in a future comparison review to see how it holds up.
