The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office released body camera footage showing a deputy stabbed in the neck by a woman authorities said he was trying to help.
Police responded to a rollover accident that occurred in the 12500 block of South Indian River Drive on Wednesday evening. Deputy Cody Colangelo, 2, located the driver, Leigha Michelle Day, 21, nearby. In the video, you can hear Colangelo trying to help the crying and distressed woman.
When the Deputy asks Day to walk to a road, she walks about halfway up the stairs before suddenly turning around and stabbing Colangelo in the neck. The deputy screams, the blade slashing his carotid artery, authorities said.

Day ran away and Colangelo fired a shot at her, but missed. However, he was able to pursue Day while putting pressure on his injury, the sheriff’s office said.
Colangelo was able to radio other MPs for help. Authorities eventually found Day hiding on an embankment and took her into custody.
Colangelo was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where he underwent a two-hour surgery during which doctors replaced part of an artery in his neck with one in his leg.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said Friday afternoon that Colangelo was home and resting comfortably.
Day is in police custody and faces a charge of attempted first degree premeditated murder. Investigators believe she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the stabbings.
The sheriff’s office said it was unclear why Day suddenly attacked Colangelo when he tried to help him.
