It is the second time in recent months that a student has been found responsible for racist graffiti. A black student at CK McClatchy High School has confessed to labeling a school’s water fountains “white” and “colored”.

In general, the City of Sacramento Unified School District has handled several cases of racist writing on its campuses, with at least one such case still under investigation. Days after the water fountain vandalism was discovered, a second racist incident at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School prompted community leaders to come together and publicly speak out against the vandalism.

In recent months, the school district has taken steps to address racism within its system. At the end of January, SCUSD hired attorney Mark. T Harris as the first-ever anti-racism liaison. The hiring was announced after two high-profile racism investigations from 2021.

Last June, a seventh-grade teacher at Kit Carson International Academy was filmed hurling a racial slur in front of her class. In November, the same derogatory slur was found at West Campus High School, written repeatedly near Vice-Principal Elysse Versher’s parking spot.

This deputy director spoke with KCRA 3 about his concern that the investigation has not yet identified a suspect.

The school district is also facing a strike involving its teachers and staff after contract negotiations failed. The strike affects some 43,000 students.
